Thunberg believed that this was needed to gain the attention of politicians and convince them to adopt measures to combat the global warming. Swedish media coverage of Thunbergs actions and the news spread. In the following days, a plethora of students across the world took part in her #FridaysforFuture strikes skipping school on Fridays in protest of climate changes. Climate activists from across the world coordinated the very first Global Strike for Climate in the year 2019. The event was hugely successful. More than 1.6 million participants across over 125 countries participated.
